Blast-resistant structural design and analysis
Protection Engineering Consultants provides research, design and consulting services related to the dynamic analysis and design of buildings subject to blast loading, with expertise in protective design for structures ranging from large government buildings to small industrial facilities.
We have significant experience designing against terrorist threats, including those defined in the UFC 4-010-01, and blast loads from accidental explosions of industrial materials and stored explosives. Our engineers serve on professional committees that publish criteria for blast-resistant design and progressive collapse avoidance, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, Prestressed/Precast Concrete International and Structural Engineering International. We have also developed numerous blast design engineering tools used and distributed by agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and TSWG.
Our services include:
- Design of government buildings to meet blast-resistant design requirements of the Interagency Security Committee
Security Design Criteria - Blast analysis of Department of Defense buildings not meeting the default minimum standoff requirements of UFC 4-010-01
- Design of buildings to protect against industrial explosions
- Blast damage assessment of existing buildings
- Design of blast-resistant structural upgrades for buildings
- Design of barricades against blast and fragment threats
- Explosive-safety siting analysis, including design of buildings and barricades to protect against blast and fragment hazards
- Design of blast-resistant windows
- Design of buildings to resist progressive collapse
