PEC awarded two DoD Small Business Innovative Research projects

Spring Branch, Texas, Dec. 15 -- Protection Engineering Consultants announced today that its has been awarded U.S. Department of Defense Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) research projects for the development of a Focused Blast Warhead and a Single Action Wall Breach system.

Focused Blast Warhead
PEC was awarded a Phase I SBIR project by the US Army Picatinny Arsenal to develop a Focused Blast Warhead for the 40mm grenade munition. Dubbed the "40mm Keyless Entry System (KES)," the warhead will be designed to focus blast over a two to three-foot diameter area to breach doors and windows found in typical MOUT settings.

Single Action Wall Breach system
The Single Action Wall Breach (SAWB) system, for warfighters operating in urban terrain operations, is designed to generate large holes in target structure walls in a single step. Man-portable, command-detonated and operable by one to two soldiers, the device will not require precise aiming and should reduce collateral damage. The concept incorporates a central impulse-generating mechanism consisting of an explosive-backed, thin ductile lens surrounded by an explosive-backed, heavy annular lens. At single or multi-point initiation, the central lens and explosive will locally fail and breach the concrete section, imparting an initial critical velocity. The trapped momentum in the central failed section will initiate tearing and severance of the peripheral rebar. The annular lens completes the rebar cutting upon impact and clears the debris, creating the desired opening.

About the Small Business Innovative Research program
The Small Business Innovation Research program funds early-stage R&D at small technology companies and is designed to stimulate technological innovation, increase private sector commercialization of federal R&D, increase small business participation in federally funded R&D and foster participation by minority and disadvantaged firms in technological innovation.
