Protection Engineering Consultants completes
ACRP commercial aircraft arrestor research

Austin, Texas, June 10 -- Protection Engineering Consultants Senior Engineer Matt Barsotti and supporting staff have successfully completed a two-year research effort to define requirements for and develop alternatives to existing aircraft arresting systems for the Airport Cooperative Research Program "Developing Improved Civil Aircraft Arresting Systems" program.

Under contract to the National Academy of Science/Airport Cooperative Research Program, Protection Engineering Consultants performed analytical, numerical and experimental research in cooperation with Southwest Research Institute SwRI to investigate alternatives to the one existing arrestor alternative, known as an Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS). Though fully functional, the EMAS system has raised concerns related to durability, size and cost.

Protection Engineering Consultants was engaged to identify and evaluate alternative technologies that could be used for arresting systems.  Substantial background research was undertaken to evaluate past work and current standards, and to survey airports. An experimental effort evaluated new materials via small-scale testing and high-fidelity computer modeling.  Three final candidate systems identified and presented to ACRP and the FAA have significant potential for development into fielded arrestors.
