Protection Engineering Consultants and
PPG Industries complete testing to validate
performance of polymer materials for blast retrofit
Austin, Texas, August 25 -- Protection Engineering Consultants engineers, led by John Puryear, Carrie Davis and Kirk Marchand, in cooperation with PPG Industries engineers and scientists, have completed full-scale blast tests and supporting analyses to further the development and application of PPG polymer systems for blast retrofit applications.
Explosive tests performed in cooperation with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) at their south Texas test site ranged in size from 200-lb. to 1200-lb. charges. Dynamic pressure and displacement instrumentation, as well as high-speed video, captured the responses of full-scale structural wall sections and window systems retrofitted with polymer materials. Results of these experiments will be used to develop application guidance for use of these materials in commercial and government buildings where expedient and cost-effective retrofit solutions are required.
