Protection Engineering Consultants awarded research program to improve understanding
of glass hazards

Austin, Texas, February 24 -- Protection Engineering Consultants has been awarded a 15-month contract by the Technical Support Working Group VIP subgroup for research to improve understanding of glass hazards from bullet-resistant glazing.

Multi-layer glass and polycarbonate transparencies are used in many applications to resist bullet impact. For serviceability, the back layer of these transparencies is glass and resists scratching and chemical etching from cleaning products. Upon impact from a projectile, this layer produces some glass debris which could cause skin lacerations or eye injury.

In partnership with Southwest Research Institute, Protection Engineering Consultants will perform tests with full-scale laminates and representative skin-forms and eye specimens to collect data to support injury analysis. Protection Engineering Consultants principal and senior engineer Matt Barsotti will lead the effort.

About the Technical Support Working Group (tswg.gov)
The Technical Support Working Group operates as a program element under the office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict and the Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office. The TSWG is chartered as a national interagency research and development program for combating terrorism requirements at home and abroad. The VIP Protection subgroup’s mission is to identify, prioritize, and execute research-and-development projects that satisfy interagency requirements for equipment and systems that alert and prevent attacks on VIP protectees. This includes hardware and tools that provide security to both the VIPs and their protectors. Inherent in this development is additional emphasis on life safety and emergency response equipment.
