3. Don’t Forget about Doors
The UFC 4-010-01 requires all exterior doors (single, double, and overhead) in inhabited areas of the building, including corridors, to be designed for the applicable blast loads. Blast-resistant exterior doors subjected to severe blast loads can be expensive and require heavy structural supports. An overhead door located in an inhabited area must be designed to withstand the applicable blast load, if not incorporate a shield wall or a tether system designed to intercept the door in the event of failure. Neglecting to include and coordinate blast-resistant doors early in the design stage could result in a significant cost increase to the project.
