Michalis Hadjioannou will be presenting a paper on “Drag Force Simulation on Blast Loaded Fabric Roof” at the 12th European LS-DYNA Conference, in Koblenz, Germany on Thursday, May 16. The presentation discusses a methodology to simulate the effects of drag force in highly deformable structures subject to blast loads. The drag force is included in the analysis as transient, velocity-dependent nodal load using the dynamic pressure equation.

This approach eliminates the need to employ any form of computational fluid dynamics which is more complex and computationally expensive. This rather simplified approach is suitable for design-level analyses where the focus is on structure-level response. PEC implemented this methodology in LS‑DYNA using a combination of standard keywords and validated it against a series of benchmark simulations. Finally, the proposed method has been used to predict the response of a fabric canopy subjected to blast. The full conference program is available here.
