Aldo McKay will present an introduction to Progressive Collapse Design at the OSEA Spring Conference held on the campus of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK this Wednesday, April 25, 2018. The two most widely used guidelines for government and military buildings will be discussed: The General Service Administration’s (GSA) “Alternative Path Analysis and Design Guidelines for Progressive Collapse Resistance”, and the Department of Defense’s (DoD) UFC 4-023-03 “Design of Buildings to Resist Progressive Collapse.”
Aldo will demonstrate how Indirect Approaches, such as the Tie Forces used in the UFC guidelines, and Direct Approaches, such as Alternate Path Analysis or Specific Local Resistance, increase the strength, ductility, and redundancy of the structural system in resisting progressive collapse. Key technical issues will be discussed, such as the importance of identifying critical deficiencies in existing buildings and the role of advanced nonlinear dynamic analysis methods in reducing the cost of structural upgrades.
