Once a year, SEI joins forces with ASCE. This year, our very own Dr. Eric Sammarco will be presenting at the Phillips Event Center (map) on March 10th from 11:30am to 1:00pm!

This presentation will provide an overview of the state-of-the-practice in highway bridge security, with focus on historical terrorist trends, unique security characteristics of bridges, and current approaches and associated reference documents for implementing bridge-specific threat mitigation measures. A holistic approach to protective design within the framework of resiliency will also be addressed, as well as industry challenges and future R&D needs.

Dr. Eric Sammarco, PhD, PE is PEC’s Advanced Technology + Research (AT+R) Team Lead and manages/supports projects and research efforts focused on mitigating risk to people, systems and mission-critical infrastructure from natural and man-made hazards, extreme accident scenarios, and hostile attacks.

Eric’s efforts have included primary authorship of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Bridge Security Design Manual; chief developer of the Anti-Terrorism Planner for Bridges (ATP-Bridge) software for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS); development of cable armoring technology for long-span bridges; and Principal Investigator of an applied research program with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) aimed at enhancing rail passenger survivability during a derailment event through resilient wayside structure designs.

Eric is President-Elect for the SEI Austin, TX branch. He also serves on the ASCE committes for Bridge & Tunnel Security, Blast, Shock, and Impact, and Dynamic Analysis of Nuclear Structures. Eric holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
